We’re proud to spotlight Milo the Mongoose—written, illustrated, and published by St. Croix resident Joshua N. Campbell, one of USVI Life’s main content contributors. Inspired by the curious mongooses he often spots near his home, Josh has crafted a warm, whimsical world that celebrates the people, wildlife, and everyday kindness of island life.
About the Series
Milo the Mongoose introduces young readers to Milo—a small, clever mongoose with a big heart. Alongside his family and island animal pals (from iguanas basking in the sun to soldier crabs scuttling among the tide pools), Milo explores St. Croix’s beaches, forests, towns, and markets. Each book in the series focuses on a core life lesson woven into Milo’s island adventures:
- Island Greetings & Manners Learning to say “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” as a warm, respectful way to start and end the day.
- Kindness & Generosity Discovering that sharing and helping friends feels richer than any treasure.
- Curiosity & Respect for Nature Exploring tide pools, tropical fruits, and local wildlife while understanding how to treat every creature with care.

Meet the Author
Josh Campbell designs digital experiences for travelers worldwide, but his favorite adventures happen right at home on St. Croix, USVI. After relocating in January 2024 to volunteer locally, Josh discovered a passion for sharing the island’s natural beauty and warm culture through storytelling. With over two decades leading innovation and data-science teams in travel technology, he still finds the greatest joy in simple moments—watching hermit crabs scurry on the sand or greeting neighbors with a friendly “Good Morning!” Milo the Mongoose is his debut series celebrating kindness, curiosity, and island life.
