If you’ve never been to Frederiksted before, it’s easy to think of it as simply the place where cruise ships dock. Or maybe you’ve heard about Rainbow Beach, the famous pier, or one of the island’s best sunset views.
Those places are certainly worth visiting—but Frederiksted has far more to offer than many visitors realize.
Unlike Christiansted, which often feels energetic and bustling, Frederiksted invites you to slow down. It’s a town best experienced on foot, where colorful buildings, quiet streets, local businesses, and Caribbean views combine to create an atmosphere that’s uniquely St. Croix.
If I were showing someone Frederiksted for the very first time, here’s exactly how I’d spend the day.

8:00 AM – Start with Breakfast
Every great day starts with good food.
Whether you prefer fresh coffee and a pastry or a full breakfast before heading out to explore, take your time. Frederiksted mornings are peaceful, and there’s no reason to rush.
Choose a local café or restaurant, grab a table outside if you can, and enjoy the cooler morning air before the day’s adventures begin.
Local Tip: Sit outside if the weather cooperates. Watching the town wake up is part of the experience. You can find some options for breakfast here.
9:00 AM – Stroll the Waterfront
With breakfast finished, head toward the waterfront.
This is one of my favorite times of day to walk the boardwalk. The Caribbean is often calm, pelicans glide effortlessly above the water, and fishing boats gently rock in the harbor.
The Frederiksted Pier stretches nearly 1,500 feet into the sea and has become one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. Even if you don’t dive, it’s worth walking out to enjoy the views.
Keep an eye on the water—you may spot sea turtles, rays, or schools of colorful fish swimming below.
Photography Tip: Morning light is excellent for photographing the waterfront and historic buildings before the stronger afternoon sun arrives. Also, you can slow the shutter speed on your camera to get a beautiful effect on the ocean. Find tips on that here.
10:00 AM – Step Back in Time at Fort Frederik
Just a short walk from the pier stands Fort Frederik. Built in the 18th century, the distinctive red fort has watched over Frederiksted Harbor for centuries and played an important role in the island’s history.
Take time to explore the fort’s courtyard, climb the walls, and imagine what life here was like hundreds of years ago.
The views from the upper levels are also some of the best in town.
11:00 AM – Wander the Historic Streets
This is where Frederiksted really begins to reveal its personality. Instead of heading straight to the beach, spend some time wandering a few blocks inland.
You’ll discover beautifully restored Danish architecture, colorful storefronts, quiet side streets, and some of the island’s most impressive murals.
There’s no need for a map. Turn down streets that catch your attention. Pause to admire the details. Look up at the balconies and decorative trim that many visitors never notice.
Some of my favorite moments in Frederiksted have happened while simply wandering without a destination.
Noon – Enjoy a Local Lunch
By now you’ve probably worked up an appetite.
Frederiksted has several excellent lunch options, whether you’re looking for fresh seafood, Caribbean specialties, pizza, or something quick before heading back outside. You can find some recommendations here.
One of the best parts of dining here is the relaxed atmosphere. Nobody seems to be in a hurry. Take your time. Order dessert if you’re tempted.
You’re on island time now.
1:30 PM – Relax at Rainbow Beach
Now it’s time for the beach. Rainbow Beach is one of St. Croix’s most popular stretches of sand, and for good reason.
The water is usually calm, the snorkeling can be excellent, and it’s one of the easiest places on the island to spend a relaxing afternoon.
Rent a chair, grab a cold drink, or simply enjoy the sound of the waves. If snorkeling is on your agenda, don’t forget your mask and fins. You never know what marine life might swim by.
3:30 PM – Discover More Beyond the Beach
If you’re ready to explore a little farther, this is a great time to venture outside downtown.
Depending on your interests, consider visiting:
- Estate Whim Museum to learn more about St. Croix’s history.
- St. George Village Botanical Garden for beautiful tropical landscapes and historic buildings.
- Butler Bay for scenic coastal views.
- Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge (when open) to experience one of the Caribbean’s longest and most beautiful beaches.
Each offers a different perspective on St. Croix beyond the waterfront.
5:30 PM – Golden Hour Along the Coast
As the afternoon light softens, make your way back toward the waterfront. Golden hour transforms Frederiksted.
The colorful buildings glow. Palm trees cast long shadows. The Caribbean takes on brilliant shades of blue and gold.
Whether you’re walking with a camera or simply enjoying the view, it’s one of my favorite times to be here.
Photography Tip: Some of the best images happen in the 30 minutes before sunset.
Sunset – Stay for the Show
If there’s one thing you absolutely shouldn’t miss, it’s sunset. Frederiksted is widely regarded as one of the best places on St. Croix to watch the sun disappear into the Caribbean.
Find a spot along the pier, settle onto the beach, or simply stand along the waterfront. Every sunset is different.
Some evenings the sky turns brilliant shades of orange and pink. Other nights it’s subtle and peaceful. Either way, it’s a wonderful way to end the day.
Dinner – End the Evening Like a Local
After sunset, choose one of Frederiksted’s local restaurants for dinner.
The pace remains relaxed. Conversations linger. The warm Caribbean evening encourages you to stay just a little longer.
It’s the perfect time to reflect on everything you’ve experienced throughout the day. You can view some recommendations here. One of my favorites places to go is Beach Side Café. I’ll often combine Golden Hour, Sunset, and Dinner there with a table right next to the beach.
A Few Local Tips
Before you go, here are a few things I’ve learned that can make your visit even better:
- Slow down. Frederiksted isn’t a place to rush from attraction to attraction.
- Walk whenever possible. Many of the town’s best discoveries happen between destinations.
- Look up. The historic architecture is full of beautiful details.
- Talk to people. You’ll often leave with a recommendation—or a story—you wouldn’t have found in a guidebook.
- Bring a camera. Frederiksted is one of the most photogenic towns on St. Croix.
Why Frederiksted Deserves More Than a Few Hours
Many cruise visitors spend only a short time in Frederiksted before heading elsewhere on the island.
I think that’s a mistake. Frederiksted rewards curiosity. It’s a place where wandering side streets is just as enjoyable as visiting famous landmarks.
Where colorful murals tell stories of the community. Where history sits beside beautiful beaches. Where sunsets remind you why so many people fall in love with St. Croix.
You might arrive expecting to spend a couple of hours here. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wishing you had planned for the entire day.
