When my wife and I first visited St. Croix, we were convinced we wanted to live on the East End.
It has beautiful beaches, incredible views, and it’s quieter than much of the island.
Today… we don’t live on the East End.
And I’m really glad we rented before buying.
1. You Don’t Really Know the Island Yet
You know vacation. You don’t know life. Those are very different.
Vacation:
- Beach every day
- Restaurants
- Relaxation
Living:
- Grocery shopping
- Hardware store
- Doctor appointments
- DMV
- Airport runs
2. Neighborhoods Feel Different When You Live There
Every area has trade-offs. You don’t have to say one is better than another. For example:
East End
- Beautiful
- Quiet
- Great views
- Longer drive for many errands
- Generally drier, which means you’ll likely rely more on your cistern during dry periods
North Shore
- Gorgeous
- More rain
- Amazing snorkeling
- Narrow roads in places
Mid-Island
- Convenient
- Close to everything
- Less driving
West End/Frederiksted
- Historic
- Beautiful sunsets
- Different pace of life
Obviously, the “best” location depends on your priorities. Another reason why renting for a while, perhaps in different areas, will help you choose the “best” area for your needs.
3. Rain Matters More Than You Think
This is something few newcomers consider.
One thing we never thought about before moving here was rainfall. Why does that matter?
- Many homes rely on cisterns.
- Rain fills your water supply.
- Some parts of the island receive noticeably more rainfall than others.
- Living in a drier area can mean paying more attention to your water usage, especially during extended dry spells.
Most people from the mainland have never had to think about where their water comes from.
4. Your Daily Drive Changes Everything
This is huge. How often do you buy groceries? Twice a week? Three times? Now imagine a 30–40 minute round trip every time.
Maybe that’s perfectly fine. Maybe it isn’t. You won’t know until you’re living here.
5. You Learn What Matters Most
When we moved…
We thought we’d care most about:
- Beaches
- Views
- Quiet
Now maybe your list looks different:
- Quick grocery runs
- Good internet
- Easier drive to Christiansted
- Friends nearby
- Church (or congregation)
- Medical care
- Airport access
Priorities evolve once island life becomes everyday life.
6. Renting Gives You Options
Live somewhere for six months. Explore. Drive everywhere.
Watch how the weather changes. Experience hurricane season.
Notice traffic.
Then decide. There are very few downsides to taking your time before making one of the biggest purchases of your life.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, renting first was one of the best decisions we made. It gave us time to experience the island as residents instead of visitors. We learned which roads we’d drive every day, where we liked to shop, how different parts of the island felt after a heavy rain, and what mattered most to us in our daily lives.
Ironically, we didn’t end up living where we thought we would. When we first visited St. Croix, we were certain the East End was where we wanted to be. It’s absolutely beautiful, and I still love spending time there. But after living on the island, our priorities shifted. Convenience, community, and our day-to-day routine became just as important as the view from our porch.
That doesn’t mean the East End—or any other part of the island—is the wrong choice. In fact, it may be the perfect fit for you. That’s exactly the point.
If you’re planning a move to St. Croix, give yourself the gift of time. Rent for a while. Explore different neighborhoods. Shop at different grocery stores. Drive the roads you’ll use every week. Experience both the dry season and the rainy season if you can.
Buying a home is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. Taking a little extra time now can help ensure that when you finally choose a place to call home, you’ll know it’s the right one—not just because you loved it on vacation, but because it fits the life you want to build here.
St. Croix is an incredible place to live. I hope you come to love it as much as we do.
