If you’re looking for a quiet snorkeling spot in St. Croix with calm waters, easy access, and a laid-back vibe, Dorsch Beach is a must-visit. Tucked just south of Frederiksted and often overlooked by tourists, this west-end beach offers surprisingly good snorkeling right off the shore.

I recently spent a morning exploring the underwater world here, and I brought my camera along. You can scroll down to see the actual video footage captured during that dive—no filters, no edits, just pure Crucian beauty.

Why Snorkel at Dorsch Beach?

  • Gentle waves: Thanks to the west side’s protection from trade winds, the water stays calm—perfect for beginners or a relaxing float.
  • Coral & sea grass: Head just a few feet offshore and you’ll find coral heads, sea fans, and patches of sea grass where turtles and rays like to cruise.
  • Colorful marine life: Expect to see schools of blue tang, wrasse, parrotfish, damselfish, trumpetfish, and maybe even an octopus if you’re lucky.
  • Easy access: Park nearby, walk right into the water—no long swim required.

Where Is It?

Dorsch Beach is located just south of downtown Frederiksted. It’s walkable from the cruise pier and rarely crowded. You’ll find soft sand, calm water, and plenty of space to relax.

If you’re facing the ocean, head to the left side of the beach (south) for the best snorkeling zones. You’ll find coral patches interspersed with sea grass—ideal for spotting reef life and turtles.

Underwater Footage

Below are the videos I captured during a recent snorkeling trip. Watch the reef come alive!

Each clip shows a different section of reef and marine life, recorded on a calm, sunny morning.

Snorkeling Tips for Dorsch

  • Bring your own gear – there’s no rental shack here.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile corals.
  • Go in the morning for the calmest water and best visibility.
  • Swim slowly—the more still you are, the more you’ll see.
  • Look for sea turtles near the sea grass beds—they often come up to breathe right next to you.

Final Thoughts

Dorsch Beach may not have the fame of Buck Island or Cane Bay, but it offers something arguably better: peaceful, uncrowded snorkeling in a setting that feels genuinely local. Whether you’re a first-time snorkeler or an experienced free diver looking for a mellow day in the water, Dorsch deserves a spot on your St. Croix itinerary.
