When I first landed on St. Croix, I relied on my U.S. license for the 60-day grace period. But to stay longer, I needed a VI driver’s license—here’s how I did it.

Gather Your Forms & Documents

  • Medical/Application Form: Download and complete the VI Driver’s License Medical/Application Form. Have a licensed local physician sign and stamp the medical section—valid for one year. Applicants under 18 also need a notarized parent/guardian consent form.
    • This is was not required when I was turning in a driver’s license from the US.
  • Proof Documents:
    • Citizens & Green-Card Holders: U.S. passport or green card; Social Security card; two proofs of VI address (utility bill, lease, etc.).
    • Non-Citizens (Limited Purpose License): In addition, a VI criminal record and proof of 180-day residency; $15 per-document verification fee applies.

Choose Your License & Pay Up

After passing the road test, decide between:

  • REAL ID License ($55)—accepted for federal purposes.
  • Limited-Purpose License ($55; +$15/document fee if non-citizen). Be ready to scan and verify all source documents.

Converting Your Existing License

  • U.S. State/Territory: Surrender your valid, unexpired license; no tests required. Provide driving record, ID, address proofs, and pay a $55 conversion fee.
  • Foreign License: Complete the VI Foreign-VI Conversion form; pass the written exam; surrender your foreign license; pay $55 + $15 verification fee.

Tips & Local Etiquette

  • Driving on the Left: We drive on the left in the VI—most cars have left-hand steering, so you just switch lanes.
  • Crucian Courtesy: A quick horn beep usually means “after you.” Return the favor with a friendly wave.
  • Be Prepared to Wait: The BMV runs on “island time”—pack a water bottle and your patience.
